RFK International House

The RFK International House of Human Rights is located within the former Murate complex, in the center of Florence, between the central districts of Santa Croce and Sant'Ambrogio.

The ambitious project, carried out by the Municipality of Florence, was completed with the inauguration in 2004 and the return to the city of a space of great value.

The "Le Murate" complex is among the places selected as part of the CIVIC PLACES initiative, the first national campaign for the discovery and enhancement of civic places in Italy promoted by Fondazione Italia Sociale together with SEC Newgate, Touring Club Italiano, and SkyTG24. The context in which it stands makes the RFK International House a unique and highly symbolic place, transformed and converted from a space of pain and suffering to an international center for human rights education.

The RFK International House occupies the wing once intended for young adult males, a section that, under the direction of Giuseppe Pasciolla, represented an early example of a rehabilitative path for the social reintegration of prisoners. It consists of two multipurpose rooms on the ground floor, a guesthouse with 12 rooms converted from the former prison cells, the offices of RFK Human Rights Italia, and a series of common areas such as a library, a living room and a large loggia. For groups who book all the rooms of the guesthouse there is a fully equipped kitchen.
